Brake Booster - Overview

OVERVIEW

Power assistance for the braking system is provided by a vacuum operated, non-active brake booster. The vacuum required for brake booster operation is created by an engine driven vacuum pump.

Rigid plastic piping connects the vacuum pump to the brake booster. Vehicles fitted with the stop/start system incorporate a brake vacuum sensor in the piping. A non return valve, installed on the front of the brake booster or in the brake vacuum sensor, maintains the vacuum necessary for brake booster operation.

Component Description

BRAKE BOOSTER

Range Rover Evoque. Power Brake Actuation

The brake booster is located on the driver side of the engine compartment, and is sealed to the bulkhead with a gasket and secured with 4 studs and locking nuts. The brake booster actuating push rod is attached to the brake pedal with a clevis pin. The brake booster output rod locates in the primary piston of the brake master cylinder.

The brake booster is a compact unit that occupies less space than a conventional brake booster, improving the vehicles crash performance characteristics. The unit is installed with tandem diaphragms that are 203.20 mm (8.00 in) and 228.60 mm (9.00 in) in diameter and operate as a single unit.

VACUUM PUMP

Range Rover Evoque. Power Brake Actuation

  1. Vacuum pump - diesel engines
  2. Vacuum pump - gasoline engines
  1. Brake booster port
  2. EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) port

For both gasoline and diesel engines, the vacuum pump is attached to the rear of the engine and driven by the intake camshaft.

On diesel engines, the vacuum pump has an additional vacuum port, which is connected to the EGR system.

Refer to: Engine Emission Control (303-08A Engine Emission Control - TD4 2.2L Diesel, Description and Operation).

BRAKE VACUUM SENSOR

Range Rover Evoque. Power Brake Actuation

The brake vacuum sensor monitors vacuum reserves in the brake booster. The sensor is mounted in the vacuum pipe and hardwired to the ECM.

Refer to: Starting System - AWD (303-06A Starting System - TD4 2.2L Diesel, Description and Operation).
